A Guide To: OLEDs

When it comes to finding the luxury lighting that is of best use to you, or that best suits your intended setting, the type of lighting is important to consider. Things like colour temperature and bulb choice can and do impact a setting, and here at iLite our staff are on hand to help you navigate any tricky questions you may have.

OLEDs are just one lighting choice you might want to consider. An abbreviation of Organic Light Emitting Diode, these are lights constructed from carbon based organic materials that combine with electricity to produce light.

While LEDs use artificial semiconductors to create light, OLEDs make use of organic materials. This makes them a more environmentally responsible choice than the more common LED lights. These lights are also more lightweight and durable than more traditional options, and they produce an illumination that is very close to the colour of natural sunlight.

Typically speaking, OLEDs do not come in traditional bulb shapes, nor do they resemble LED modules or arrays. These lights are in the shape of flat panels. Incredibly thin and flexible, they are a lighting advancement perfectly suited to contemporary design.

When it comes to luxury lighting design, OLEDs are still very new. It’s going to take a lot of advancements across the industry before they become more common in the consumer marketplace, but their appeal is easy to see.

OLEDs are more pricey to produce, but their benefits are obvious. With manufacturers striving for a way to reduce production costs for these lights, this new technology is a glimpse of a possible direction the future of the lighting industry could take.
