“The joy is in the process… Setting barriers, you cross them, you hit limits… There were limits, and you pushed them, that is what I enjoy” – Patricia Urquiola

Born in the Spanish town of Oviedo before attending the faculty of architecture at the Madrid Polytechnic and the Milan Polytechnic, Patricia Urquiola is a superstar in the world of lighting design.

The Milan based artist opened her own studio in 2001, and has become a household name in product design, architecture, interiors, installations, and concept creation. For her creativity, Urquiola has been awarded such prizes as the International Design Yearbook, IMM Cologne, Good Design Awards of the Chicago Athenaeum, Red Dot Award, and Elle Decoration International Awards, to name but a few.

Urquiola has been nominated as designer of the year by a number of institutions, Elle Decoration International Design Awards,  Wallpaper magazine, AD Spain, Maison & Object Paris, A&W Germany, and the Interior Design Hall of Fame. But perhaps her most prestigious honour came from the Spanish Government and the King of Spain, who awarded her with the Gold Medal of Fine Arts and the Cross of the Order of Isabella the Catholic.

With products exhibited in permanent collections at such esteemed museums as New York’s MoMA and the Triennale Milano, Urquiola’s success is one that resounds through the industry.

Demonstrating such a respected ability to instill splendour into everyday items and functions, Urquiola was the perfect partner for Flos Lighting. Together the pairing has brought about such successful designs as Chasen, Serena, and Tatou.

To celebrate International Women’s Day (on Wednesday 8th March), all our blog posts this week will be celebrating female designers in the world of lighting. Read more here.
