Foscarini detail new Reverse Room exhibition

When it comes to contemporary luxury lighting design, Foscarini Lighting is a name rooted in both history and class. Working with some of the most esteemed designers, theirs are lighting creations with an unquestionable sense of class.

The brand have announced that from May 22nd to June 4th they will be presenting a new project in London. That project is entitled Reverse Room. Reverse Room is an installation created by the artist and architect James Wines with his daughter Susan Wines.

Foscarini Lighting described the installation ahead of it’s unveiling: “in a room with dark walls, upside-down and obliquely tilted, furnished by monochrome tables and chairs, the table lamps peer down from the ceiling, while the hanging fixtures sprout from the floor with the aim of challenging our perception of spaces and our responses to environmental stimuli and conventions.”

The brand have since gone on to say that “this show quite literally turns the perception of lighting on its head.” Portrayed as being totally unique, and as being as industry challenging as it is industry defining, there’s a lot of excitement surrounding Foscarini’s new Reverse Room.

Visual teasers for the project have been few and far between, and those that have been shared display striking typography conveying the important information. Visual teasers of the actual project have yet to be shared – but that doesn’t mean that getting any insight into what the Reverse Room might be like is impossible. Far from it, in fact.

This isn’t the first time Foscarini have collaborated with James Wines. Their collaboration dates back more than thirty years. Their first piece together, titled “Table Light / Wall Light” was a work produced by the company with Wines’ SITE group in 1991 for the cultural areas of the exhibition in Verona “Abitare il tempo”.

Today that collaboration exists in the guise of a signature collection project. The Light Bulb Series is composed of a number of pieces in limited and numbered editions, considered precious due to the story it tells and the thinking it conveys.

Inspired by the form of a classic light bulb, Wines organises his reflections around the main themes that have guided his architectural research. This is based on human responses to the surrounding environment and actions that influence them.

As the brand themselves describe: “the light bulbs are transformed from objects of consumption to works of blown glass, disrupting expectations: they melt, crack and split, they are inverted, become black, or are invaded by nature. They embody all those states of “architectural defect” that make it possible to break free of any academicism, to rethink reality, giving it form and at the same time dissolving its boundaries.”
