Introducing: Schonbek's History

Schonbek Lighting has a long established history stretching back more than a century. The brand has always been one of the most esteemed names in crystal chandeliers. Now a subsection of the Swarovski Group, the brand remains standing strong as one of the brightest around.

Every aspect of this company's history has a bearing on where the company stand today. A direct influence on the brand's identity, this history is very much a part of not only who Schonbek are, but also how they go about presenting themselves.

The brand name has been esteemed for all of its existence. What follows is an overview of the milestones and monuments within the brand's history.


Adolph Schonbek left his family glassworks in Bohemia at the age of 24 to pursue his own path. He did this by beginning his own crystal chandelier business, A. Schonbek & CO.

1890 - 1900

Franz Joseph I of the Habsburgh Court awarded Schonbek its iconic crest. Around this time, the company delivers a 27-foot-tall, 600 candle crystal chandelier to the Nizam of Hyderabad in India. This solidified the brand's reputation as the premier international manufacturer of custom-made crystal chandeliers.


At the young age of 17, Arnold Schonbek took over the family business from his father, Arthur.


Arnold Schonbek relocated to Montreal, Canada and began his family’s company from scratch.


Arnold Schonbek patented his revolutionary “bow-tie connector” for crystal trim in the U.S. and Canada. Developing their own technologies, this further positioning the business as a leader in ingenuity.

1972 - 1973

A second factory was opened in Plattsburgh, NY.


Schonbek showcases another breakthrough as it unveils a new method of gluing crystals together. This innovative technique allowed for the creation of previously un thought of chandelier designs, including Trilliane, which was released in 1992. To date, Schonbek is responsible for nearly 200 patent.


Schonbek Worldwide Lighting was developed into an international brand. By this time, all business and manufacturing operations had been moved to the U.S. Since then, all Schonbek luminaires are designed and handmade in the U.S. at its state-of-the-art facility.


The company introduces its contemporary Geometrix Product Collection. Today’s Contemporary Collection continues to add sparkle to everyday lives.


The brand became a member of the Swarovski Group.


Trilliane co-stars in Black Swan, fortifying the brand's longstanding presence in the film and entertainment world.


A new lighting showroom exclusively featuring the two premium lighting brands, Schonbek and Swarovski, is opened in Dallas, TX. Together, they continue to revolutionize the lighting industry.


Schonbek Worldwide Lighting officially adopted the name Swarovski Lighting, Ltd. One company with two sparkling brands of lighting, Swarovski and Schonbek.
