News Flash: Nobel Prize awarded to study of light

Posted on October 04 2017

The luxury lighting industry is one that has always remained founded on excellence - but it's not all about aesthetics. It's long been known that light has the ability to affect our day to day lives. The study of this has once again reached the forefront of culture as the Nobel Prize has been awarded to circadian scientists who have studied the impact of light.

Through investigations spanning a decade or more, starting as early as 1984, these scientists identified three genes that help to keep the circadian clock in sync. This is crucial because the circadian clock regulates critical functions such as behaviour, hormone levels, sleep, body temperature, blood pressure, and metabolism.

One of the factors with the capability of throwing a circadian clock out of its rhythm is light, and that is why it is so important. Certainly, there is now plenty of research looking into light's role — including that of artificial LED light — as both a villain and a hero in relation to circadian health.

In winning this prize, the importance of light on day to day light is further cemented. Here at iLite Lighting, the brands and designs we stock and sell are selected in order to bring the very best to you.
