In the late 19th century a bohemian jeweler had the dream of making crystal more attainable to everyone. That jeweler was Daniel Swarovski, and 1885 was the year his dream started to become reality. Patenting an electric machine that could crystal more precisely than by hand, he founded the company we now know as Swarovski. Setting up a base in the small town of Wattens, high up in the Austrian alps, the nearby rivers provided an all natural energy that made the location an ideal setting for the brand's first production site.
It was another eighty years before Swarovski turned their expertise towards the lighting industry. Introducing their ornate crystal elements a components for use in chandeliers and lighting fixtures in 1965, the beauty of the products was unrivaled. Sputnik (pictured above) stole the show at the newly built Metropolitan Opera House in New York on opening night, where the first ovation was for the chandeliers as they glided upwards before the show to prevent obscuring the views from the higher seats.
In the years since then, Swarovski crystals have inspired designers all across the world of lighting. Their cutting edge technologies combine crystal and light in a way that is completely unique to the Swarovski brand, transforming any space into an iconic location of dazzling wonder.
Already an established name in the lighting industry by this point, Swarovski's first premium lighting collection was unveiled at Europe's leading design show, Euroluce, in Milan in 2011. Drawing from a long-ingrained expertise and finely tuned inspiration, the brand's traditional aesthetic and contemporary design language placed them as market leaders.
