LED Pendant Light FAQs

iLite's LED Pendant Lighting

LED Pendant lights always make a statement. Available in all shapes, sizes, materials and finishes, pendant lights create a strong focal point and are perfect for placing in any room of your home, whether that be in small spaces or larger rooms with high ceilings. We offer pendant lights tailored to your space, as most of our fixtures are height adjustable.

Choosing the right light for your home will create an inviting, warm and comfortable place for your family and visitors to enjoy dining, telling stories and memorable moments. But how do you select the right pendant lights for your space? We have compiled a list of questions that will help make your decision easier:

1. How do I choose the right pendant light for my room?

When it comes to choosing ceiling lights, you should consider two points; first, look at your room décor and then select lighting that will enhance your interior style. As a rule, try not to buy a light and then attempt to figure out which room it will work best in - it's better to match the room to the light and buy with a purpose!

Secondly, apart from considering the materials you want, decide what main function the lighting will serve. Once you have narrowed down to a focal spotlight or full room illumination, you can choose from several designs, rather than be overwhelmed by an entire catalogue.

As the name implies, downlights direct the light downward. Smaller downlight pendants are commonly used as focal point lighting for specific areas of a room, as the smaller, more intense spotlight draws attention to a particular area. This style of lighting is an excellent choice for illuminating desk areas, reading nooks and kitchen countertops.

There are three different uses for a pendant light:

  • Overall light and all-purpose illumination
  • Task lighting to offer safety and clarity
  • Feature or accent lighting to highlight specific areas

Consider the amount of illumination you want for each room. The amount of light you want in a bedroom is going to be different from the living room, kitchen and bathroom. The colour and intensity of the bulb you choose will affect the mood and effectiveness of your lighting.

When selecting pendant lights for overall lighting, consider a pendant with a light diffuser or use semi-opaque bulbs, to avoid circles of bright light being cast into your space.

For task lighting, choose pendants that are open at the top, which ensures the light underneath is not too harsh.

For feature or accent lighting, try a dimmer switch to create versatile light output.

The style of pendants also has to suit your functional needs. For a softer glow, select fabric pendant lights where the light is diffused through the fabric shade. For task lighting, choose glass or acrylic shade pendants to maximise light output and emit a concentrated light.

2. How big should my pendant light be?

To avoid disrupting the design of your living space, it's crucial to choose the right size of pendant light. Check the size of the room the pendant will feature in, including the height and width of the area. Oversized fittings can clutter a space and restrict lines of vision, while an undersized pendant will look insignificant. The pendant lights shouldn't look oddly small or overpowering.

As a general rule, the larger the area, the bigger the pendant lights should be.

There is a calculation that you can do to determine the right size of light for your room size. It can be increased or decreased by 10% depending on your taste.

Diameter/width is key!

Determine the diameter of a light fixture that’s best for your space by:

Measure the length and width of the room in meters
Example: 3.0m by 3.7m

Add the two lengths together.
Example: 3.0m + 3.7m = 6.7m

Multiply that number by 7.5

Example: 6.7m x 7.5 = 50.25m

Round the number and swap that value to cm (so 50.25m becomes 50cm).

This number would be the ideal diameter for a light fixture in this room.

Example: 50cm

If you have high ceilings, a slightly larger lamp would work better for your space. We recommend increasing the diameter you get from the calculation.

If the room is very narrow, it is better to use 2 points of light.

(Room Length (m) + Room Width (m)) x 7.5 = Fixture Width or Diameter (cm)

If you plan on placing the light fixture over your dining table, choose a lamp whose diameter is half the length of the table. In other words, if the table is 150cm long, the lamp should be about 70cm to 75cm. For a banquet-style table or an especially long dining room table, two lamps work better than one.

Height

In general, we recommend that the light is 6-7cm tall for every 0.3m of space between the floor and ceiling. You can find this number by following the next formula:

Start with the height of the room (floor to ceiling) in m
Example: 2.4m high

Multiply the height by 6 to 7 per 0.3m
Example: (2.4/0.3) x 6 and (2.4/0.3) 10 x 7 = 48 - 56cm

48-56cm is the range of the ideal height for a light fixture in this room.

The above calculations assume you have a ceiling height proportional to the room size. If you have low ceilings, flush mounts, semi-flush mounts and recessed lighting are perfect for your home. Not only will these add light to your space, but they take up little room.

Final Note:

If your room is large or requires overall light, consider having a number of pendant lights spaced evenly throughout the room.

Clustering is another great technique and can be used to create a nook in the corner of a room or to embellish a stairwell with a cascade of lights. Try hanging pendants at different heights or selecting different shapes or colours from the same pendant range.

3. What height should I hang pendant lights?

The most crucial element to installing pendant lights is the height at which you hang them.

Pendants hung too low will obstruct views and dominate the room. On the other hand, pendants hung too high will be lost in space.

As a general rule, larger lights can be hung higher while smaller lights can be hung lower within a space.

For more specific lighting:

  • Pendants used as task lighting above areas such as kitchen sinks should be hung approximately 1.8m from the floor.
  • Pendants above dining tables should be hung between 1.5m and 1.7m from the floor, or 75-85cm above a table allowing for unobstructed conversations between diners.
  • Pendants over a bathtub live 2.4m of clearance (for getting in and out!)
  • Pendants within a room of a 2.4m ceiling height should be hung about 1.9–2.1m from the floor.
  • Pendants in ceilings over 2.4m add 7.5cm of hanging height per 30cm. For example, a 3m ceiling calls for a hanging length of 90-100cm.

There is also the option of selecting pendants with retractable cords which are easily adjustable to suit different tasks.

4. How easy is it to install a pendant light?

Assuming you are replacing a fixture that already used a junction box, it will only take three steps and about half an hour to install your new pendant light. Check our guide of how to fit your new ceiling light in 3 steps!

5. How to clean and care for your pendant light

Lights, by their very nature, are fragile and should be treated with care. Don’t forget to turn them off at the fuse box and completely detach any shades before cleaning. All our lights should be wiped clean with a dry cloth instead of a vacuum cleaner, to avoid damaging the glass or finish.

Recommendation: Pendant lights can be simple or can come with elaborate designs. If you want to avoid tedious cleaning, choose a style with easy to reach surfaces. Pendant lights do need occasional cleaning to maintain it’s great look and function.

For specific cleaning instructions, please refer to individual manufacturer recommendations.
